Description

WW2 era British Army Royal Ulster Rifles Caubeen, a traditional Irish bonnet worn by rifle regiments. The caubeen is dark green in color, featuring a black feather plume on the side. Attached to the front of the bonnet is the regiment’s distinctive harp cap badge with the Latin motto “Quis Separabit” (Who shall separate us), surmounted by a crown. The interior shows some wear, particularly to the lining, but it is still a solid example of a rare military headgear.

  • Era: WW2 Era
  • Condition: Used with visible wear to the interior; exterior remains in good condition
  • Features: Original black feather plume, harp badge with motto “Quis Separabit”
  • Notable Detail: The Royal Ulster Rifles were part of the British Army, tracing their lineage to earlier Irish regiments. They saw extensive action during WW2, participating in several key campaigns, including D-Day and the subsequent operations in Northwest Europe.

A fine addition for any collection of British military headgear or WW2 militaria.

Involvement in Major WWII Campaigns:

  1. France and Dunkirk (1939-1940): At the start of the war, the 1st Battalion of the Royal Ulster Rifles was deployed to France as part of the British Expeditionary Force (BEF). They fought in defensive actions against the German blitzkrieg before being evacuated from Dunkirk during Operation Dynamo in 1940. This evacuation is seen as one of the most dramatic moments of the early war, saving many British troops and allowing them to fight another day.
  2. North Africa Campaign (1942-1943): The 2nd Battalion was sent to North Africa to participate in the Allied invasion of Tunisia. They fought in some of the fiercest battles of the campaign, engaging German and Italian forces in challenging desert conditions. The North African campaign was a turning point in the war, weakening the Axis foothold on the continent and setting the stage for the invasion of Sicily.
  3. D-Day and the Battle of Normandy (1944): Perhaps most famously, the Royal Ulster Rifles participated in the D-Day landings on June 6, 1944, as part of the 6th Airborne Division. They were involved in securing vital objectives, such as bridges and roads, to ensure the success of the landings and prevent German counterattacks. Their actions in Normandy were critical in supporting the Allied advance into occupied France.
  4. Operation Varsity (1945): The Royal Ulster Rifles also took part in Operation Varsity, the largest airborne operation of the war, which was launched in March 1945. They crossed the Rhine River into Germany, playing a crucial role in the final Allied push into Nazi territory. Their efforts contributed to the eventual collapse of the German army and the end of the war in Europe.
