This is an original WW2-era cap badge of the 3rd King’s Own Hussars, a storied British cavalry regiment with a history stretching back to 1685. The badge features the regiment’s iconic galloping horse above a scroll inscribed “3rd King’s Own Hussars”, cast in white metal with a brass scroll and fitted with a slider on the reverse for wear on the service dress cap.

The 3rd King’s Own Hussars traced their lineage to the 3rd Regiment of Horse, later the 3rd Dragoon Guards, before becoming a light cavalry unit in the 1861 army reorganization. During the Second World War, the regiment initially served in the British Expeditionary Force in France in 1940, fighting a series of rearguard actions before evacuation from Dunkirk. They were later deployed to North Africa, where they took part in the Western Desert campaign, serving under the Eighth Army in operations such as Crusader, Gazala, and the hard-fought battles at El Alamein. Following their service in the desert, the regiment participated in the Allied invasion of Italy, fighting in key actions at the Gustav and Gothic Lines until the war’s end.

This badge, worn by all ranks on the service dress cap, reflects the proud mounted heritage of the regiment, with the galloping horse symbolizing the speed, mobility, and shock action of the cavalry arm. The 3rd King’s Own Hussars would later amalgamate with the 7th Queen’s Own Hussars in 1958 to form the Queen’s Own Hussars, carrying forward the traditions of both regiments.
