This is an original World War I Italian War Medal, officially known as the Medaglia della Guerra 1915–1918. Instituted by Royal Decree on July 29, 1920, the medal was awarded to all Italian and allied soldiers who served in the Italian Armed Forces during Italy’s involvement in World War I, from its entry into the war on May 24, 1915, until the armistice in November 1918.

Struck in bronze and featuring the bust of King Victor Emmanuel III on the obverse with the inscription “GUERRA PER L’UNITÀ D’ITALIA 1915–1918”, the medal celebrates not only military service but also Italy’s aspirations for national unification through the recovery of territories such as Trentino, South Tyrol, and Istria from Austro-Hungarian control.

The reverse features a winged Victory atop a Roman triumphal chariot drawn by four lions—symbolizing national triumph. The ribbon is a distinctive rainbow pattern, similar to that used by many Allied nations for their respective victory medals, representing unity among the victorious powers.

While the medal was awarded to millions of veterans, this piece represents the gritty and often overlooked campaigns Italy waged along the Alpine front, in places like Caporetto, the Isonzo River, and the decisive Battle of Vittorio Veneto. Soldiers endured brutal mountain warfare, extreme weather, and heavy casualties.
