Hungary had lost Transylvania under the Treaty of Trianon in 1920—a national trauma that fueled revanchist sentiment for two decades. With the backing of Germany and Italy, Hungary was awarded Northern Transylvania on August 30, 1940, without direct military conflict. This medal was instituted shortly after to honor those who had taken part in the peaceful entry, occupation, and administrative reorganization of the region, including military personnel, gendarmes, and state officials.

The obverse features the crowned Hungarian coat of arms flanked by laurel and oak leaves—symbols of victory and strength—along with the inscription commemorating the return of Siebenbürgen. The reverse typically bears a legend indicating gratitude from the Hungarian nation. The medal is suspended from a green, white, and red ribbon reflecting the Hungarian national colors.
