WW1 French Commemorative Medal 1914–1918 (Médaille Commémorative de la Grande Guerre)

This is an original WW1 French Commemorative Medal (Médaille Commémorative de la Grande Guerre 1914–1918), awarded to French and Allied personnel who served during World War I. Instituted on June 23, 1920, by the French government, this medal was issued to recognize all individuals who contributed to the war effort, including soldiers, auxiliary personnel, and civilians involved in wartime support roles.

Historical Context:
Unlike the Croix de Guerre, which was awarded for bravery in combat, the Médaille Commémorative de la Grande Guerre was a service medal, given to those who participated in or contributed to France’s war effort between August 2, 1914, and November 11, 1918. Eligible recipients included French and colonial troops, medical personnel, laborers, and some foreign allies who served under the French command.

The obverse of the medal features the helmeted profile of a classical warrior figure (symbolizing the French Republic) holding a sword and laurel branch, representing courage and sacrifice. The reverse bears the inscription “République Française – Grande Guerre 1914–1918”, confirming its issue as an official wartime commemoration. The upper part of the medal is adorned with an oak and laurel wreath, symbolic of victory and remembrance.

This example is suspended from its original red and white vertically striped ribbon, which was officially designated for this medal.

A significant and historically important piece, the WW1 French Commemorative Medal 1914–1918 is a must-have for collectors of French military decorations, WW1 memorabilia, and Allied war service awards.
