Description
This original World War II-era US Army "Ike" jacket is a beautifully preserved example of a post-1944 Enlisted Man’s short dress coat, tailored in the classic "Eisenhower" style and worn by a Staff Sergeant of the United States Army Europe (USAREUR). This particular jacket is constructed in OD wool serge and remains in excellent condition, complete with a full matching wool shirt and tie set. The jacket is size 36 Regular and features period-correct detailing throughout. Of special note is the theater-made USAREUR shoulder sleeve insignia (SSI), executed in finely hand-embroidered bullion thread on a blue felt background. The patch design—featuring a flaming sword beneath a rainbow arch—symbolizes European postwar occupation and readiness, and was worn by personnel assigned to the newly formed US Army Europe beginning in 1945. The bullion construction suggests this insignia was produced by local tailors, likely in occupied Germany, and intended for formal or dress wear. Additional insignia includes cut-edge Staff Sergeant chevrons on both sleeves and US/Infantry branch collar discs. The left chest displays a hand-sewn ribbon bar featuring the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, and World War II Victory Medal. Below the ribbons is a sterling rifle qualification badge with “RIFLE” bar, consistent with a trained combat infantryman. The internal Quartermaster tag is stamped “Phila. Quartermaster Depot,” and the full interior lining remains intact, showing only light wear. This is a representative uniform of an enlisted infantryman who likely served during the latter phases of the European Theater and remained on occupation duty in Germany with the USAREUR command structure—formed in August 1945 to oversee the rebuilding and stabilization of postwar Europe. The presence of the USAREUR patch places the jacket’s use firmly in the 1945–47 occupation period, while the style and components are fully WW2-era. A historically important, complete dress uniform set reflecting the transition from wartime service to postwar occupation duty in Europe.
