Description

This is an original WW2 German Wound Badge in Silver, miniature stickpin version, intended for civilian wear on a suit or lapel. The badge is finely detailed for its size and features the classic 1939 design—a German Stahlhelm (steel helmet) overlaid on crossed swords, framed by a laurel wreath. This example is stamped with the maker’s code L/5, indicating manufacture by Walter & Henlein of Gablonz, a well-known firm that produced a range of Third Reich awards and insignia.

The Wound Badge (Verwundetenabzeichen) was re-instituted by Adolf Hitler in September 1939 to recognize Wehrmacht and Waffen-SS personnel who were wounded or killed in action. The Silver Grade was awarded to those wounded three or four times, or who suffered a single severe injury such as loss of a limb or eye, extensive burns, or long-term battlefield incapacity. It was also occasionally bestowed posthumously. The 1939 series of badges was based on the WW1 design but updated with more angular lines and a swastika on the helmet (as seen here in miniature form).

Stickpin versions like this were private-purchase items, worn by veterans in civilian clothing—especially at reunions, remembrance events, or other formal gatherings. These miniatures were not official issue but were permitted and widely accepted as part of the broader veteran culture in the Third Reich.

Measuring approximately 16mm in diameter with a sharply defined twisted knurled shaft, this badge retains its original blackened silver finish with light wear consistent with age. The reverse is clearly stamped with the L/5 mark, adding collectible value. A fine and authentic example of wartime veteran memorabilia, linking decoration, personal sacrifice, and post-service identity.
