Description
WW2 US Army Air Forces A-2 Flight Jacket by J.A. Dubow Mfg. Co., Size 44 – Lieutenant’s Issue This is an original World War II Army Air Forces Type A-2 flight jacket manufactured by J.A. Dubow Mfg. Co. of Chicago under government contract W535 AC-23383. Produced under Drawing No. 30-1415, this jacket is a textbook example of Dubow’s wartime horsehide construction and is marked as a rare size 44—one of the largest sizes issued during the war, making it especially desirable to collectors and reenactors alike. The jacket remains in exceptional condition for its age, showing honest combat wear consistent with prolonged wartime use while retaining strong structural integrity. The leather is remarkably supple with a rich russet patina and subtle creasing that reflects its long service life. The Talon zipper is fully functional and retains its original brass slider and top stop. The two front pockets still house the original concealed interior buttons, and the knit cuffs and waistband, though worn, appear original. One of the most distinctive features of this jacket is the presence of raised leather 2nd Lieutenant’s rank bars on the epaulets—an uncommon and personalized feature indicating officer ownership. The left breast shows unmistakable ghosting and stitch remnants from a once-sewn leather squadron patch, long removed but clearly visible, preserving a silent record of the wearer’s unit affiliation. The faded outline of a leather name strip also remains above the left pocket—typical placement for AAF officer identification. The Dubow A-2 has long been recognized as a quintessential example of wartime contract flight jackets. Issued to USAAF pilots, bombardiers, and aircrew in every theater of operations, these jackets quickly became personal canvases for crew identity—decorated with painted insignia, unit patches, and often personalized with nose art. This particular jacket exhibits all the hallmarks of a veteran-worn artifact that saw real combat service. Its large size, outstanding wearability, and untouched originality make this a standout example. Whether displayed as part of a USAAF collection or worn with care, it represents a true piece of American aviation history—an authentic garment worn by those who flew and fought in the skies of WW2.
