This original World War II US Army 5th Armored Division shoulder sleeve insignia (SSI) is a classic example of the later-war manufacture, lacking the earlier green backing. These patches, typically featuring a plain cotton or gauze backing, reflect evolving wartime production methods as the war progressed and material priorities shifted. Despite the change in backing, the vivid red, blue, and yellow embroidery remains consistent with the wartime design, showcasing the lightning bolt, tank tread, and cannon barrel that symbolize the division’s combined arms power and mechanized mobility.
The absence of a green back places this example later in the war, making it representative of field replacements or issues during the final campaigns across the Rhineland and into Central Europe. These late-war variations were often sewn directly onto field or dress uniforms as the division pushed into Germany during 1945.
Historical Background:
Known as the “Victory Division,” the 5th Armored Division was activated on October 1, 1941, at Fort Knox, Kentucky. It played a key role in the Third Army’s push across Western Europe. After landing in Normandy in July 1944, the 5th Armored was committed to combat in August and quickly proved its effectiveness in mobile warfare.
The division was instrumental in the Falaise Pocket operation, where its swift armored thrusts helped trap large German formations. From there, the 5th Armored blazed a trail across Northern France, into Luxembourg, and eventually deep into Germany. It was the first US unit to enter Luxembourg and one of the first to reach the Elbe River, halting just short of Berlin by the war’s end.
The 5th Armored fought in five major campaigns: Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes-Alsace, and Central Europe. Its combat record reflects an agile, hard-hitting armored formation that was well-respected among both Allied and enemy commanders.
