Description
The 9th Infantry Regiment, one of the oldest active units in the United States Army, carried a distinguished legacy into the Second World War. Known by its motto “Keep Up the Fire,” the regiment traced its origins to 1798 and had already earned distinction in multiple American conflicts by the time it was mobilized for global war in 1941. During World War II, the 9th Infantry served as part of the 2nd Infantry Division, a Regular Army formation that played a central role in the European Theater. The regiment landed on Omaha Beach on June 7, 1944, during the second day of the Normandy invasion. Immediately engaged in combat, the 9th Infantry took part in the drive inland through the bocage country, where German resistance was stubborn and the terrain heavily favored the defender. In the following weeks, it participated in the battle for Saint-Lô and helped secure key positions during the Allied breakout from Normandy in late July. Following the collapse of German lines in western France, the 9th advanced rapidly across the country and was among the first U.S. units to reach and engage German forces near the Belgian border. During the autumn of 1944, the regiment played a prominent role in the brutal Hürtgen Forest campaign, one of the costliest and most grueling operations undertaken by American forces in Europe. Facing entrenched German defenses, land mines, and dense terrain, the 9th sustained heavy casualties while attempting to seize key objectives under punishing conditions. In December 1944, during the German Ardennes Offensive, the 9th Infantry was redeployed to counter the breakthrough in what became the Battle of the Bulge. It engaged in a series of defensive and counteroffensive operations that helped halt the German advance and restore Allied lines. In early 1945, the regiment participated in the final push into Germany, crossing the Rhine River and advancing through central Germany as part of the drive toward Leipzig and the Elbe River. By war’s end, the 9th Infantry Regiment had fought continuously from Normandy to the heart of Germany, sustaining its longstanding reputation for discipline, endurance, and offensive capability. Its actions during the Second World War added new chapters to a regimental legacy that continues to be honored today.
