This is an authentic WW1 US Army wool service jacket attributed to the storied Black Hawk Division (86th Infantry Division). The jacket was manufactured under contract by Cohen, Goldman & Co., New York, in 1917, as indicated by the intact interior label. Featuring two overseas service chevrons, a discharge chevron, and a WW1 Victory Medal Ribbon bar, this jacket tells the story of a soldier’s honorable service during the First World War.

The Black Hawk Division, named after Chief Black Hawk of the Sauk tribe, was composed primarily of soldiers from Illinois and the Midwest. Formed in August 1917 at Camp Grant, Illinois, the division underwent extensive training stateside before its deployment overseas in August 1918. While the division itself was designated as a replacement division and did not see combat as a whole, many of its soldiers were transferred to other American Expeditionary Force units and participated in critical campaigns during the war. The distinctive divisional patch, prominently displayed on the left shoulder, features a black eagle on a red triangular background and symbolizes the division’s proud heritage.

This jacket retains its original four-pocket wool construction and is complete with blackened brass general service buttons. There is some noting on the back of the jacket, as seen in the images provided, which adds character and authenticity to this historic piece. Such wear is consistent with a garment that has endured over a century and preserves its value as a collector’s item.
