Description
WW1 US Officer’s Personal Toiletry Kit – Complete with Watson’s Match Box and Original Contents This is an original and remarkably complete World War I-era personal toiletry and hygiene kit once carried by a United States Army officer. These privately purchased kits were an essential part of daily life in the trenches, dugouts, and billets of the Great War, offering some semblance of normalcy amid the chaos of war. This set includes several components that reflect the daily grooming and readiness routines expected of officers during the American Expeditionary Forces’ (AEF) 1917–1918 deployment. Contained within this compact ensemble is a rare aluminum Watson’s Match Box, clearly marked “Watson’s Match Box, Fairfax VA, USA,” and still containing its original wooden strike-anywhere matches—an uncommon survival over a century later. These patented screw-top match containers were manufactured in Virginia and widely purchased by officers for field use, valued for their durability and water-resistant sealing that preserved matches in muddy or rainy combat environments. The Watson’s Match Box alone is a collectible item, frequently found on the belts or in the haversacks of officers serving on the Western Front. Accompanying the matchbox is a diverse array of personal hygiene items:
-
A period glass bottle labeled “Shaving Lotion”, of fluted design with a black plastic cap, still retaining the faint remnants of its original contents. -
A bar of original soap, housed in a metal tray with fitted lid—used for both general washing and shaving. -
A crimped and partially used tin of “Kromo Shave” shaving cream, still soft to the touch, nestled in a large pressed tin container, alongside two small grooming tweezers or extractors. -
A second rectangular tin, possibly for razor storage. -
Two additional elongated cylindrical cases, likely for toothbrushes, razors, or grooming scissors.
All of these pieces are stored in well-constructed aluminum or tinned-steel containers, a reflection of wartime manufacturing practices emphasizing lightweight, corrosion-resistant materials. The presence of these personal effects together as a set—unbroken, unrestored, and with original shaving and grooming products—offers a rare and intimate window into the life of a US officer in the First World War. Historical Context:
Personal hygiene was not merely a matter of comfort in the trenches of WW1—it was a military imperative. Officers were expected to set examples for their men, maintaining neat appearance despite the mud, lice, and filth of the front. Trench foot, lice infestation, and disease were rampant; kits like these were more than convenience—they were defense against deteriorating morale and health. The American Expeditionary Forces arrived in France in 1917 and soon found themselves in the midst of one of the most industrialized and grueling conflicts in history. Officers, especially those in command of platoons and companies, were expected to maintain discipline, readiness, and the highest standards of military decorum—even amid bombardments and long rotations on the line. The items in this kit, individually mundane, collectively represent the dignity and resilience of the officer class under extreme conditions. This kit is untouched, uncleaned, and as-found—a superb time capsule from the trenches of the Great War. An exceptional addition to any serious WWI collection, living history impression, or museum-quality display. Very few examples survive with all components intact.
