WW1 Era U.S. Model 1902 Officer’s Sword with Monogrammed Blade
Description:
This is a remarkable WW1 Era U.S. Model 1902 Officer’s Sword, distinguished by its elegant design and monogrammed blade bearing the initials “D.H.” The blade features intricate floral and scroll etchings, highlighting its ceremonial purpose while reflecting the prestige of its original owner. The Model 1902 was the standard sword for U.S. military officers, designed for both functionality and presentation.
The nickel-plated hilt showcases a flowing guard with a pierced floral motif, perfectly complementing the black composite grip molded with finger grooves for a comfortable and secure hold. The sword retains its original polished steel scabbard, complete with dual suspension rings for proper wear. An orange portapee is also attached, enhancing the sword’s ceremonial appeal and historical significance.
Historical Context:
The Model 1902 Officer’s Sword was introduced at the turn of the 20th century and became the standard sidearm for commissioned U.S. Army officers during formal occasions and ceremonies. Its sleek, lightweight design allowed for easy handling while maintaining an appearance of dignity and authority. Personalized swords with monograms, like this one, were often purchased privately by officers to reflect their individual identity and service.
During World War I, swords like this were carried by officers as part of their dress uniform. While they were largely ceremonial by this time, they remained a proud symbol of rank and tradition within the U.S. military.
Condition:
This sword is in very good condition, with the blade retaining much of its original polish and finely detailed etchings. The monogrammed initials “D.H.” are sharp and clear, adding a personal touch to this piece. The nickel-plated hilt and guard exhibit light wear consistent with its age, and the grip is intact with minimal signs of use. The original scabbard shows some minor surface wear, adding to the sword’s historical character. The attached portapee is slightly aged but remains securely in place.
This WW1 Era U.S. Model 1902 Officer’s Sword is a significant artifact of American military history and would make an outstanding addition to any collection of edged weapons or militaria.
