Description
The 8th Infantry Division, known as the "Golden Arrow Division", played a critical role in the European Theater of Operations during World War II. Reactivated in July 1940 at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, the division trained extensively in the United States and the United Kingdom before deploying to continental Europe in July 1944.

The 8th Infantry Division landed at Utah Beach in Normandy, France, on 4 July 1944, one month after D-Day. Attached to General Omar Bradley’s First Army, the division was immediately thrust into the fierce and grinding hedgerow fighting that characterized the early Normandy campaign. It participated in the breakout from the Cotentin Peninsula and was instrumental in capturing Rennes on 8 August, opening routes deeper into Brittany.

The division’s next major objective was the vital port city of Brest, one of the most heavily fortified German positions in western France. From August through mid-September 1944, the 8th Division fought a brutal urban battle alongside other Allied units, ultimately forcing the German surrender on 18 September after reducing a series of entrenched strongpoints, including the formidable Festung Brest.

Following the Brittany campaign, the division moved east and crossed into Luxembourg in late 1944. It took up positions along the Siegfried Line, where it engaged in extensive patrolling and limited-objective attacks to probe and weaken German defenses.

In February 1945, the 8th Division participated in Operation Grenade, the offensive to cross the Roer River and advance into the heart of Germany. It crossed the Rhine River near Bonn and fought through the Ruhr Pocket, helping to trap hundreds of thousands of German troops in the collapsing Western Front.

Continuing its advance, the division pressed eastward into central Germany, capturing towns and mopping up bypassed enemy forces. On 6 May 1945, just two days before V-E Day, the 8th Infantry Division reached the Elbe River, making contact with Soviet forces near Hagenow, north of Magdeburg.

By the end of the war, the Golden Arrow Division had spent over nine months in continuous combat, capturing over 300,000 prisoners and suffering more than 13,000 casualties. It earned a reputation for toughness, tactical effectiveness, and tenacity in both open-field and urban combat.

The division's combat record includes participation in key campaigns: Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, and Central Europe. Its legacy is deeply connected to the liberation of occupied Europe and the final defeat of Nazi Germany.
