Spanish-American War Era U.S. Army McKeever Pattern Cartridge Box – Watervliet Arsenal

This original Spanish-American War era McKeever Pattern Cartridge Box, stamped with “U.S.” on the front flap, is a classic example of U.S. military gear used during the late 19th century. Manufactured by Watervliet Arsenal, as marked on the back, this box features black leather construction with brass hardware, designed for durability in field conditions. The interior retains the original canvas cartridge loops, capable of holding .45-70 government cartridges for the Springfield Trapdoor Rifle. The leather shows signs of wear consistent with age, adding to its authentic patina, and the stitching is largely intact, ensuring its structural integrity remains sound.

The McKeever pattern was notable for its hinged design, allowing the soldier to open the box and access two rows of cartridges with ease. The brass finial closure is still functional, and the rear belt loops are reinforced for attachment to the waist belt.
