Indian Wars Era 1889 Brown US Army McKeever Pattern Brown Cartridge Box
This original U.S. Army McKeever Pattern Cartridge Box, stamped with “U.S.” on the front flap, dates back to 1889 and is crafted from brown leather, a distinctive color from the Indian Wars period. The box features the characteristic McKeever hinged design, opening to reveal canvas cartridge loops capable of holding .45-70 government rounds for the Springfield Trapdoor Rifle. The brass finial closure remains fully functional, securing the flap in place. Despite some wear and surface stains, the leather is in remarkably good condition for its age, with all stitching intact.
The rear of the box includes two leather belt loops for attachment to the soldier’s waist belt. Faint markings suggest this box was produced at a U.S. Army arsenal in 1889, just before the turn of the 20th century.
Dimensions:
- Length: Approx. 7 inches
- Height: Approx. 4 inches
- Depth: Approx. 2 inches
Historical Context: The McKeever Cartridge Box was a standard issue for U.S. troops during the late 19th century, especially during the Indian Wars and the Spanish-American War. Introduced in 1879, the design allowed soldiers to carry cartridges securely and access them efficiently in the field. This box was likely used by infantry or cavalry soldiers during the latter years of the Indian Wars, a period marked by U.S. military campaigns against Native American tribes in the American West. With the adoption of the .45-70 caliber Springfield Trapdoor Rifle, boxes like these were an essential part of the soldier’s kit. The brown leather variant seen here is more closely associated with this era, as the Army transitioned to black leather by the time of the Spanish-American War.
