Description
WW2 German Wehrmacht Foreign Volunteer Shield – Azerbaijani "Asberbaidschan" Sleeve Shield This is an original WW2-era German Wehrmacht foreign volunteer sleeve shield for troops of the Azerbaijani Legion (Aserbaidschanische Legion), featuring the bold inscription "Asberbaidschan" in white Gothic script over a horizontal tricolor of blue, red, and green—the traditional Azerbaijani national colors. Constructed as a BeVo-style machine-woven patch, this shield would have been worn on the upper right sleeve of volunteer uniforms by Azerbaijani nationals serving under German command. The Azerbaijani Legion was one of many Ostlegionen formed by Nazi Germany following the invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941. Initially organized under the German Army (Heer), these legions recruited Soviet POWs and anti-Soviet ethnic minorities—offering them a role in the German war effort in exchange for promises of national autonomy or simply survival under brutal POW conditions. The Azerbaijani Legion was officially established in 1942 and would go on to include up to 30,000 men divided among several battalions and security units. Volunteers served in roles ranging from front-line infantry to rear-area security, anti-partisan operations, and guard duty, particularly in the Balkans and on the Eastern Front. Many were later transferred to the Waffen-SS under SS command as the war progressed and German manpower needs grew increasingly desperate. Despite Nazi racial ideology, the regime pragmatically embraced these units for their military utility. These sleeve shields were intended to foster esprit de corps and indicate national identity among foreign auxiliaries. They were part of a broader system of ethnic insignia designed to differentiate non-German volunteers within the Wehrmacht structure. The "Asberbaidschan" shield is among the scarcer volunteer insignia due to the relatively limited numbers and the legion’s complex wartime fate, especially as many legionnaires were forcibly repatriated to the Soviet Union after the war under tragic circumstances. This example remains a poignant and highly collectible artifact from the Eastern Front and Germany’s uneasy relationship with its foreign legions—illustrating the contradictions and desperation of Nazi military policy in the latter half of World War II.
