Description

RL238/31 (Maury & Co., Offenbach) Vetrieb genehmigt gemäß & Luftschutzgesetz Kopfweite: 56 Hoechstpreis 8.00 RM Manufactured by Maury & Co. of Offenbach and marked “RL2-38/31,” this three-piece Luftschutz Gladiator helmet is a classic example of German civil defense equipment produced for the Reichsluftschutzbund (RLB) during the Second World War. Sized at 56, this helmet design—known colloquially as the “Gladiator” type due to its flared skirt and shallow dome—was one of the most commonly issued Luftschutz helmets, particularly early in the war. Composed of three separate pressed steel sections crimped together, the helmet offered a lightweight yet functional solution for air raid personnel, fire wardens, and factory protection units operating in bomb-threatened urban areas. The factory-applied dark blue paint remains consistent with Luftschutz specifications, and the iconic Luftschutz decal featuring the winged eagle and swastika within a laurel wreath would have been affixed to the front. Helmets produced under the RL (Reichsluftschutz) designation followed specific procurement guidelines under the Reichsluftfahrtministerium (RLM), and the “RL2-38/31” code identifies both the year of acceptance and the authorized manufacturer. The Luftschutz played a vital role in the Nazi regime’s civil defense network, especially as Allied bombing campaigns intensified. Organized formally under the Reichsluftfahrtministerium in 1935, the Luftschutz was responsible for preparing the civilian population for air raids, enforcing blackout conditions, managing public air raid shelters, coordinating fire suppression, conducting search-and-rescue operations, and maintaining order during and after attacks. Its personnel—often drawn from factory workers, older men, and women—were trained in basic emergency response, bomb disposal awareness, and crowd control. The Luftschutz also cooperated closely with organizations such as the Technische Nothilfe (Technical Emergency Corps) and police during large-scale air raids in major cities like Hamburg, Berlin, and Dresden. By 1943–1945, as strategic bombing became a constant threat across the German home front, Luftschutz activity expanded dramatically, and helmets like this became a familiar sight across industrial zones and civilian communities. Their practical, standardized design reflects the total mobilization of German society in defense of the homeland and offers a tangible link to the daily reality of life under bombardment in the Third Reich.
