This original German Erkennungsmarke (identity disc) is stamped “Bau Kp. 2/44” with the soldier’s roll number “89.” It belonged to a member of Baukompanie 2 of Bau-Bataillon 44, a military construction unit within the Wehrmacht. The Bau-Bataillone (construction battalions) were non-combat support units tasked with vital infrastructure work such as road and bridge building, fortification construction, airfield preparation, and logistical support.

Bau-Bataillon 44 was originally formed before the outbreak of war and was active throughout multiple major campaigns, especially on the Eastern Front. These units were frequently deployed in support of advancing armies and were crucial in establishing the infrastructure needed for sustained military operations across vast territories, especially during the invasions of Poland and the Soviet Union. They were often among the first troops to arrive in newly conquered territories and also played a key role in rear-area defense and rebuilding efforts.

The “2/44” designation refers to the 2nd Company of the 44th Construction Battalion. These units were often composed of older reservists, conscripts, or lower-category troops, but they frequently operated under harsh conditions and could be targeted by partisans or enemy air raids, especially as the tides of war turned against Germany after 1943.

Stamped from zinc and still legible, this tag remains in very good condition and represents a lesser-known but critically important part of the German war effort—engineering and support units without which front-line operations could not be sustained. Items from construction units are far less common than combat unit tags, making this an excellent addition for collectors interested in the logistical backbone of the Wehrmacht.

This dog tag measures approximately 70mm x 50mm and is complete with its original unbroken form, featuring pre-drilled holes and the standard break notch for battlefield identification.
