This example is a classic 1914 issue with a three-piece construction, magnetic iron core, and a silver frame showing honest patina and age toning throughout. The obverse features the Imperial crown, the initial "W" for Kaiser Wilhelm II, and the date "1914" at the bottom. The reverse shows a textbook flat back with a vertical pinback system, not a screwback, and the wide flat pin and barrel hinge suggest early to mid-war manufacture.

Instituted on August 5, 1914, by Kaiser Wilhelm II, the Iron Cross First Class was awarded to soldiers who had already received the Iron Cross Second Class and had continued to distinguish themselves in combat. It was worn on the left breast without a ribbon and served as a highly visible symbol of frontline valor and leadership.

Unlike its World War II successor, the WWI Iron Cross retained its elegant simplicity and was not awarded for merit in non-combat roles. The design, originally created by Karl Friedrich Schinkel in 1813, remained essentially unchanged, symbolizing continuity in Prussian and later German martial tradition.
