Description
This is a textbook example of the 1936 pattern German Wound Badge in Black, awarded during World War II to recognize soldiers of the Wehrmacht, Waffen-SS, and other paramilitary formations who sustained combat-related injuries. Stamped in sheet metal and finished in matte black paint, this badge features the iconic M1916-style Stahlhelm (steel helmet) set over crossed swords, surrounded by a laurel wreath. While the finish on this example shows moderate wear consistent with age and handling, the fine details of the design remain sharp and well-defined.

Originally instituted during World War I, the Wound Badge (Verwundetenabzeichen) was reauthorized on September 1, 1939, and retained three classes: Black for one or two wounds, Silver for three or four, and Gold for five or more wounds or grievous injuries such as loss of a limb or eyesight. The 1936 redesign modernized the WWI version, adding the national eagle and swastika above the helmet—a change seen here in this wartime example. The reverse exhibits a functional pin and catch assembly typical of later war manufacture, likely produced by one of the many wartime firms such as L/11 (Wilhelm Deumer) or L/56 (Funcke & Brüninghaus), though this example is unmarked.

The Wound Badge held special significance among German soldiers as a visible testament to their personal sacrifice in battle. It was often one of the first decorations received by frontline troops and could be worn on both field and dress uniforms. Veterans of earlier conflicts who were wounded again during WWII were eligible to upgrade their badge to a higher class.

A fine representative piece of Third Reich military awards, this badge stands as a tangible reminder of the brutal realities of frontline service on the Eastern and Western Fronts.
