WW2 Dutch Police Round Cap Cockade – Staatspolitie / Nederlandse Politie Visor Cap Insignia (Circular Variant)

This is an original World War II-era round-pattern Dutch police cockade, worn on the dienstpet (visor cap) by members of the Nederlandse Politie and Staatspolitie under the German occupation of the Netherlands. Featuring a circular design with enameled national colors—red center, white ring, and blue-painted fluted edge—this cockade was mounted with rear prongs and a metal bar for secure placement on headgear. It is a period-manufactured variation of the more commonly encountered oval cockade, but fully consistent with wartime Dutch police issue.

Following the German occupation in May 1940, the police structure of the Netherlands was reformed under German control. The Dutch police—Nederlandse Politie—was organized into three primary components: Gemeentepolitie(municipal police), Rijkspolitie (national police), and Staatspolitie (state police). While nominally independent, these forces were subordinated to the German Ordnungspolizei and increasingly integrated into the SS-controlled security apparatus, especially as the war progressed.

The Staatspolitie, which operated at the national level, took on an increasingly political role, conducting surveillance, arrests, and enforcement of German directives. Despite retaining outward signs of Dutch authority, such as the use of the national cockade, many police units collaborated with German forces in the persecution of Jews, the suppression of resistance activity, and the enforcement of curfews and forced labor orders.

This round cockade is historically associated with those wartime police forces and reflects both the visual identity and political entanglements of Dutch law enforcement under occupation. It remains a key artifact of the complex relationship between national institutions and occupying powers during the Second World War.
