Description

This is a fine example of the Irish Defence Forces Reserve Service Medal, known in Irish as An Bonn Seirbhíse (FCÁ agus SM), awarded for long and honorable service in Ireland’s military reserve forces. Instituted in June 1961, this bronze gilt medal honors the commitment of reservists who served in either An Fórsa Cosanta Áitiúil (FCÁ), the Army Reserve, or An Slua Muirí (SM), the Naval Reserve. This example includes the original ribbon bar and issue box, making it a desirable and complete set for collectors of Irish militaria.

Struck in copper gilt on bronze and measuring 36mm in diameter, the obverse features a striking image of a medieval warrior clad in traditional Irish garb, bearing a spear and shield adorned with a Celtic swirl. This heroic figure represents the enduring spirit of the Irish defender and is encircled by the inscription “ÉIRE DO SHLUAIGH A CHUSTAIM” — “Ireland to Her Customary Troops.”

The reverse bears the inscription “An Bonn Seirbhíse U.D. FCÁ agus SM.” (“The Service Medal for Members of the Reserve Defence Forces FCÁ and SM”), confirming the medal’s eligibility group. The decoration is suspended from a vibrant blue and yellow ribbon — colors long associated with Irish military tradition — with a gilt suspension bar marked “Seirbis” (Service). This particular ribbon variant, with blue flanked by yellow, signifies a seven-year qualifying period. A central yellow stripe would indicate twelve years, while additional service is recognized by affixed bars.

The FCÁ and SM formed the core of Ireland’s post-independence defense structure, intended to supplement the standing army in times of national emergency. These citizen-soldiers participated in regular training exercises and national defense duties, many of them having served or grown up in the shadow of The Emergency — Ireland’s World War II-era neutrality mobilization.

While often overlooked in favor of full-time military awards, the Defence Forces Reserve Medal represents the dedication of thousands of Irish men and women who stood ready in service of their country, continuing a proud tradition of voluntary defense service. This boxed example with its original pinback ribbon and service bar is a representative artifact of Ireland’s Cold War-era military history.
