This is a complete and original example of the Irish Emergency Service Medal, awarded to members of the Local Defence Forces (L.D.F.) and other civil and auxiliary services who served during Ireland’s “Emergency” period of World War II, from 1939 to 1946. Though officially neutral, Ireland mobilized a wide array of civilian and paramilitary units to defend the country during the global conflict, and this medal recognizes those who contributed to the nation’s preparedness and internal stability.
Struck in bronze, the obverse of the medal features a heroic female figure in classical style, sword in hand and leading a faithful hound, with the motto “de na prainne” (“for the emergency”) inscribed along the rim. The reverse displays a sprig of olive with the dates “1939” and “1946” and the Irish Gaelic legend “Na Caomhnóirí Aitiúla,” which translates to “The Local Defenders.” This example is complete with its correct bi-color ribbon in red and cream, the officially issued pinback clasp bar “1939–1946,” and an upper suspension bar inscribed “Serbhis Naisiunta” (“National Service” in Irish). The original ribbon bar is also present in the box.
This medal is housed in its original issue box with inset slot for both the medal and the ribbon bar—an uncommon find in such complete condition. It was awarded to men and women who served with distinction in a variety of roles, including air raid precautions (ARP), auxiliary fire services, coast watching, first aid units, and local security forces across Ireland during WWII.
The Emergency period (Éire’s term for WWII) was a formative time in Irish state-building, where neutrality was maintained despite threats from both Axis and Allied powers. Volunteers who received this medal played a critical role in defending Ireland’s sovereignty and infrastructure under the constant threat of invasion, espionage, and air attack.
An exceptional piece of Irish wartime history, this medal represents the collective vigilance of a neutral nation on high alert—scarce and especially desirable when boxed and complete.
