Description
This original three-place Imperial German ribbon bar reflects the battlefield valor and postwar recognition of a decorated soldier who served during the First World War. Combining honors from the Kingdom of Prussia, the Grand Duchy of Hesse, and the later Weimar-era German state, this bar offers insight into both federal military traditions and individual acts of courage. From left to right, the ribbons represent: Eisernes Kreuz 2. Klasse (Iron Cross 2nd Class) – Reissued by Kaiser Wilhelm II in 1914, the Iron Cross was the central military decoration of the German Empire, awarded for bravery under fire and exceptional leadership in combat. The stark black-and-white ribbon is synonymous with valor on the Western and Eastern Fronts. Hessische Tapferkeitsmedaille mit Schwertern (Hessian Medal for Bravery with Swords) – This less commonly encountered award was issued by the Grand Duchy of Hesse-Darmstadt during WW1 to recognize exceptional acts of courage by enlisted men. The ribbon, black with narrow white stripes and a central red band, denotes the military version, while the miniature crossed swords indicate wartime combat recognition. Hesse maintained its own awards system despite integration into the larger Imperial German Army. Ehrenkreuz für Frontkämpfer mit Schwertern (Hindenburg Cross for Combatants) – Introduced in 1934, this cross honored all veterans who had seen combat service during WW1. The bronze crossed swords identify the awardee as a frontline soldier. It was the first official service decoration of the Weimar Republic, and it became a widely worn badge of honor among Germany’s aging veteran population. This ribbon bar provides a window into the layered complexity of Imperial German military service—where regional loyalties and decorations coexisted with imperial symbols of valor. The inclusion of the Hessian Bravery Medal makes this an especially uncommon and desirable piece for collectors of German state militaria.
