The regiment originated in the Duchy of Nassau as the 1st Nassau Infantry Regiment and initially served under Napoleon, including participation in the Peninsular War. After the dissolution of the Confederation of the Rhine and Nassau’s incorporation into Prussia in 1866, the regiment was restructured as the Prussian Infantry Regiment No. 87. It went on to serve with distinction in the Franco-Prussian War and later became part of the German Imperial Army under Kaiser Wilhelm II. Its garrison was located in Mainz, strategically positioned on the Rhine frontier.

This bronze medal with its striking dual-colored ribbon represents not just a regimental anniversary, but the long arc of shifting German loyalties and military traditions from Napoleonic conscription through Prussian unification.
