The reverse presents a bold heraldic eagle with outstretched wings, clutching arrows and an olive branch, encircled by the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, and ONE DOLLAR. The “S” mintmark, located below the wreath on the reverse, denotes its origin at the San Francisco facility.

With a mintage of approximately 12.76 million, the 1881-S is relatively common in circulated grades. However, its true distinction lies in the exceptional quality of its strikes.
