Description
Russian Empire – 1846 1 Kopeck Serebrom Copper Coin
Tsar Nicholas I (Reign: 1825–1855), Saint Petersburg Mint This 1 Kopeck “Serebrom” copper coin was minted in 1846 under the rule of Nicholas I, Emperor of Russia, during a period of intense centralization and conservative reform. Despite being struck in copper, the denomination refers to its silver-based value—serebrom meaning “in silver”—a monetary term used during the mid-19th century to standardize coinage across the empire according to silver equivalence, not actual content. The reverse bears the Cyrillic legend:
1 КОПѢЙКА СЕРЕБРОМЪ / 1846 / С.П.Б.,
indicating the denomination, year of issue, and mint location—Saint Petersburg. The obverse features the crowned imperial cypher “Н I” (Nicholas I), elaborately styled in imperial monogram form, surmounted by the Romanov crown. The design reflects the autocratic authority of the tsar and the strong centralized aesthetic of Nicholas I’s regime. This coin was produced as part of the monetary reforms enacted in the 1830s–40s, which sought to unify copper, silver, and gold coinage under more stable and accountable measures. The copper “serebrom” kopecks circulated widely in rural and provincial Russia, used in everyday transactions by the empire’s peasantry and urban working classes. 1846 falls within a period of internal order but growing external pressure for reform. Although Nicholas I resisted liberalization, his reign saw rising tensions that would later erupt in the Crimean War (1853–1856). Coins from this era offer a tangible link to the daily economic life of Imperial Russia, under the rigid yet expansive reach of tsarist bureaucracy. Surviving examples such as this remain popular with collectors of Romanov-era coinage and Eastern European monetary history.
