Description
This is an original World War II-era membership badge of the Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei (NSDAP), the political organization that rose from the turbulent politics of the Weimar Republic to dominate Germany under Adolf Hitler from 1933 to 1945. Party membership badges such as this were first introduced in the early 1920s, worn by members to signify their allegiance to the party’s ideology and leadership during a period of intense political rivalry. The badge design was standardized by 1929, featuring a black swastika within a white enamel field, encircled by a red enamel border bearing the inscription NATIONAL-SOZIALISTISCHE-D.A.P. in gilt lettering. This symbol was not merely decorative—it was intended as a constant public declaration of loyalty, serving as a visible link between the individual member and the broader movement. Members were expected to wear it prominently on civilian clothing, and it became one of the most recognized political insignia in Germany during the Third Reich. On the reverse, this example bears the stamped code M1/66, identifying the manufacturer as Fritz Kohm of Pforzheim. The “M1” prefix was part of the Reichszeugmeisterei (RZM) coding system introduced in the mid-1930s, which centralized and controlled the production of all official political regalia to ensure uniformity and quality. The RZM mark itself was the emblem of the party’s quartermaster’s office, which oversaw every aspect of procurement for political organizations affiliated with the NSDAP. By the outbreak of WW2, the NSDAP badge had evolved beyond a mere membership emblem. It had become a potent political statement, closely tied to the regime’s propaganda apparatus. Wearing the badge in public signaled ideological reliability, often granting members access to the party’s social networks, political opportunities, and material benefits. Conversely, the absence of such insignia could draw suspicion in an environment where conformity was enforced both socially and politically. The maker, Fritz Kohm, was based in Pforzheim—a city long renowned for its precision metalwork and jewelry production. Many Pforzheim firms received RZM contracts due to their expertise in fine enameling and die-striking techniques, producing badges that were both durable and visually striking. Kohm’s output during the war years included a range of political and paramilitary insignia, all manufactured to strict party specifications. Today, original NSDAP membership badges remain a significant artifact for students of history, symbolizing both the organizational discipline of the party and the intense political culture of the Third Reich. Their survival offers tangible insight into how visual symbols were used to unify a political movement and project its power into everyday life.
