Description
WW2 Imperial Japanese Navy Petty Officer First Class Sleeve Rank Insignia-等兵曹 (Ittōheisō)

This is an original World War II-era sleeve rank insignia for the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) rank of Ittōheisō (一等兵曹), or Petty Officer First Class. Worn prominently on the upper sleeve of naval uniforms, the insignia features a golden-yellow embroidered anchor flanked by laurel leaves—a symbol of maritime authority and service—beneath a single broad bar with a narrower stripe above it, designating the rank within the Heisō (enlisted petty officer) tier. The backing is black wool with a cloth reverse, consistent with standard IJN construction during the wartime period.

Petty Officer First Class was the second-highest non-commissioned rank in the Imperial Japanese Navy’s enlisted structure, subordinate only to Jōtōheisō (Chief Petty Officer). Personnel holding the Ittōheisō rank often had years of experience and were entrusted with both technical duties and supervisory authority over lower-ranking sailors. They served as section leaders aboard warships, in aviation maintenance crews, gunnery departments, and submarine crews, bridging the gap between enlisted sailors and the officer corps.

The Heisō class of ranks mirrored the organizational philosophies of other contemporary navies, including the U.S. Navy, but within the uniquely rigid and honor-driven framework of the IJN. The effectiveness of these NCOs was critical to Japan’s operational capabilities during key naval engagements such as the Battle of Midway, the Solomon Islands campaign, and extensive submarine operations throughout the Pacific. This insignia represents not only rank but the experience and leadership of seasoned petty officers in a navy that played a central role in the maritime history of the Second World War.
