WW2 US Army Technician 5th Grade Armored 4th Armored Division/Constabulary Ike Jacket, Numbered, Size 36L
This original WW2 US Army Ike jacket represents a remarkable piece of wartime and post-war history. Crafted in Olive Drab Wool by Sewell Mfg. Co. and dated August 12, 1944, the jacket highlights the practical yet sharp design that defined the iconic “Ike” jacket. Developed for utility and appearance, the jacket was widely adopted during the Second World War and became a symbol of American soldiers.
This jacket showcases the insignia and decorations of a Technician 5th Grade, a specialized role requiring technical skill, from the 4th Armored Division, nicknamed “Breakthrough,” known for its vital contributions during the European Theater. The 4th Armored Division patch on the left shoulder features a bold red, blue, and yellow design with a tank and lightning bolt symbolizing the division’s mobility and combat effectiveness. The right sleeve bears the insignia of the United States Constabulary, a post-war force responsible for maintaining security and order during the occupation of Germany.
Further detailing includes U.S. and Armored Corps collar insignia, a ribbon bar above the left breast pocket commemorating campaigns and achievements, and gold-tone buttons that remain securely in place. Inside, the jacket retains its original contract label, confirming its manufacture in 1944 with pattern specifications filed earlier that year. Markings such as “E 0627” and the size designation “36L” are clearly visible.
The 4th Armored Division played a pivotal role in major campaigns, most notably during the Battle of the Bulge when it relieved the besieged town of Bastogne in December 1944. Following the war, units like this one transitioned into the U.S. Constabulary forces, tasked with stabilizing occupied Germany and assisting with rebuilding efforts. This jacket stands as a testament to the soldier’s dual role in combat and peacekeeping during a turbulent era.
This piece is in excellent condition for its age, with all original patches, insignia, and buttons intact. It is a superb addition for collectors and historians, offering a tangible link to the soldiers who shaped the outcome of the war and the peace that followed.
