WW2 Era German Army Lion Head Officer’s Sword by Hörster
Description:
This is a remarkable WW2 Era German Army Lion Head Officer’s Sword, crafted by the esteemed E. & F. Hörster of Solingen. The sword features a gold-plated hilt with a lion’s head pommel, complete with inset red glass eyes, showcasing Hörster’s attention to detail. The knuckle guard and branches are intricately adorned with oak leaf and acorn motifs, symbolizing strength and honor.
The grip is made from black composite material and is wrapped with a double-twisted brass wire for a secure and elegant feel. The blade is stamped with Hörster’s distinctive maker’s mark, confirming its authenticity. The sword is accompanied by its original steel scabbard, finished in black paint and fitted with a suspension ring for proper wear.
An original silver and green portepee with a knot is attached, adding to the sword’s ceremonial appeal and reflecting its use by a high-ranking Wehrmacht officer during World War II.
Historical Context:
Lion head officer’s swords were widely favored by German military officers during World War II, serving as symbols of rank and authority. These swords were typically purchased privately, reflecting the owner’s personal taste and status within the military hierarchy. E. & F. Hörster, one of Solingen’s premier blade makers, produced high-quality swords that were both functional and highly decorative.
Such swords were commonly worn during parades, formal events, and as part of the officer’s dress uniform. The ornate details of this sword highlight its role as more than just a weapon—it was a statement of power, prestige, and tradition.
Condition:
This sword remains in good condition for its age, with some minor points to note. The blade retains much of its original finish with light wear. The gold-plated hilt displays a warm patina, and the lion’s head pommel with inset red glass eyes is well-preserved. However, the handguard has a slight wiggle, and the pommel is not as tight as it ideally could be, which is common in swords of this age. The black-painted scabbard shows minor signs of use, consistent with its history. The attached portepee is in good condition, adding to the sword’s presentation.
