Description
WW2 German Feuerschutzpolizei Wachtmeister Tunic – Hamburg District This is an original mid-to-late war issue Dienstrock (service tunic) worn by a Wachtmeister (Sergeant) of the Feuerschutzpolizei—the Fire Protection Police—stationed in the city of Hamburg. The Feuerschutzpolizei operated as a specialized branch of the Ordnungspolizei (Orpo), responsible for firefighting, air raid response, and civil defense during the Third Reich. By 1938, all municipal fire departments in Germany had been militarized and incorporated into the national police structure, and their uniforms and ranks were standardized accordingly. This particular tunic is manufactured in dark navy-blue wool with vivid pink (rosarot) piping denoting its assignment to a fire police unit. The collar features enlisted-style pink-backed collar tabs with machine-embroidered double litzen bars, while the sewn-in shoulder boards indicate the rank of Wachtmeister with aluminum braiding on a pink underlay. The left sleeve bears a striking BeVo-woven city district sleeve insignia, reading “Hamburg” in red embroidery above a matching red national eagle and oak leaf wreath. All original aluminum pebbled buttons are present, each bearing the crossed axe and helmet motif of the German Fire Police. The interior is partially lined in black cotton and retains the original tailor’s label, Paul Rogberg, a known period manufacturer. Evidence of removed insignia or re-sewn areas is minimal, and the jacket displays honest service wear throughout. The overall condition of the wool is very good, with vibrant piping, strong insignia, and clear construction details consistent with wartime issue. This tunic measures approximately 21.5 inches across the chest, equating to roughly a modern size 42. Larger Feuerschutzpolizei tunics are increasingly scarce, particularly from major cities like Hamburg, which played a critical role in civil defense during Allied bombing campaigns. This is a particularly fine example of a German wartime fire police service jacket, ideal for advanced uniform collectors or display in a homefront or civil defense collection.
