Description
This is an original pre-World War 1 Imperial German Tellermütze—or “plate cap”—worn by an officer of the small but historically significant Principality of Lippe. This elegant circular cap features the iconic oversized, flat crown design used by German officers in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Constructed in dark blue wool with a vivid red band and double red piping, this example reflects the colors used by Lippe infantry regiments, specifically Infantry Regiment Nr. 55 (Infanterie-Regiment Graf Bülow von Dennewitz (6. Westfälisches) Nr. 55), which included a battalion garrisoned in Detmold, the capital of Lippe. The cap displays the correct silver and red cockades: one for the German Empire and the lower cockade for the state of Lippe, denoting the wearer’s regional allegiance within the federal monarchy. The interior is lined in white cotton and stamped “JR,” likely indicating Jäger-Regiment or Infanterie-Regiment. While the regiment marking is abbreviated, it remains consistent with known officer-grade field and dress caps of the period. The stiff construction and clean interior seam work are typical of prewar officer-quality tailoring. The Tellermütze was a distinct symbol of officer status, especially in peacetime garrison life or during parade functions. Worn in conjunction with the Waffenrock (tunic), the cap’s broad, flat top was often exaggerated in size to emphasize prestige, a sharp contrast to the more practical field caps introduced during WW1. This example remains structurally sound but does show field use, with light moth tracking and a few scattered holes visible on the crown and side band—consistent with over a century of age. The Principality of Lippe was one of the smaller German states, and headgear specific to its regional units is relatively scarce. With its eye-catching design, vibrant regimental colors, and correct cockades, this Tellermütze is a striking relic of Imperial German officer culture and the elaborate military tradition that preceded the mechanized horrors of the Great War. A fine addition to any Imperial headgear or WW1-era German collection. At VDG Militaria, we are dedicated to providing collectors with an exceptional selection of original military antiques.
