Description
The 3rd Infantry Division of the British Army, often referred to as “Monty’s Iron Sides” due to its long association with General Bernard Montgomery, was one of the most storied formations of the Second World War. It played a pivotal role from the very start of Britain’s involvement in the conflict through to the defeat of Nazi Germany in 1945. At the outbreak of war in September 1939, the 3rd Infantry Division was part of the British Expeditionary Force (BEF)deployed to France. Commanded at the time by General Montgomery, the division was well-trained and among the most professional in the British Army. During the Battle of France in May 1940, the division was heavily engaged in the defense against the German Blitzkrieg. It fought a series of delaying actions along the River Dyle and during the withdrawal to the coast, playing a crucial role in the Dunkirk evacuation (Operation Dynamo). Despite heavy casualties and the loss of much of its equipment, the division was one of the last to be evacuated from the beaches. After returning to Britain, the division was refitted and spent four years training and preparing for the eventual Allied return to mainland Europe. It remained under Montgomery’s direction until he moved on to higher command, and the division retained a reputation for discipline and combat readiness. The 3rd Infantry Division was selected to spearhead Operation Overlord, the Allied invasion of Normandy. On June 6, 1944 (D-Day), the division landed on Sword Beach, the easternmost of the five landing beaches. Facing stiff resistance from elements of the German 716th Static Infantry Division and later from counterattacking units of the 21st Panzer Division, the 3rd Division secured the beachhead and pushed inland toward Caen, a major early objective. Over the next several weeks, the division was heavily engaged in the Battle of Caen, participating in operations such as Perch, Epsom, and Goodwood, which saw intense urban and open-field combat against seasoned German formations, including SS Panzer divisions. Casualties were high, but the division’s determination contributed significantly to the eventual liberation of the city. Following the breakout from Normandy, the 3rd Infantry Division advanced through northern France, Belgium, and the Netherlands, continuing to serve with distinction. In early 1945, it crossed the Rhine as part of Operation Plunder and took part in the final Allied thrust into northern Germany, eventually reaching the Elbe River by war’s end. The 3rd Infantry Division’s record in World War II stands as one of the finest in the British Army. From Dunkirk to the Elbe, it was at the forefront of the Allied war effort in Western Europe, exemplifying professionalism, resilience, and combat effectiveness.
