Description
This is an original 18th–19th century Indo-Persian katar (कटार), the iconic punch dagger of the Indian subcontinent, deeply rooted in the martial cultures of the Mughal, Rajput, and Maratha warrior classes. Measuring approximately 16.25 inches (41.3 cm) in overall length with a blade length of 7.25 inches (18.4 cm), this example is forged in traditional high-carbon steel, showing evidence of age and mineral patina consistent with period craftsmanship and long-term exposure. The blade features a deep medial ridge flanked by fullers, culminating in a sharp, armor-piercing triangular point ideal for delivering devastating thrusts through chainmail, padded armor, or even plate. The blade geometry is reinforced for rigidity and penetration, a hallmark of katars from the northwestern Indo-Persian martial corridor. The hilt consists of parallel side bars and triple cross-bracing grip bars, typical of North Indian and Mughal variants from the Punjab and Rajasthan regions. The structure is forged integrally with the blade, enhancing strength and functionality in close-quarters combat. The upper cross-guard is visibly fractured, exposing the structural metallurgy, but remains intact for display and research. Light pitting, surface oxidation, and old battle wear lend authenticity and character. The katar was more than just a weapon—it was a statement of status, bravery, and honor. Wielded by elite warriors, bodyguards, and nobility alike, it was often presented during ceremonial functions or worn as a mark of rank and courage. During the decline of the Mughal Empire and the rise of regional powers like the Sikhs and Marathas, weapons like this saw action in brutal close-combat engagements and dueling traditions. This example, though structurally fractured at the base of the blade, remains a rare and visually striking artifact of South Asian martial history. Whether as a centerpiece for a Mughal-era display, a collector’s example of Indo-Islamic metallurgy, or a study piece on colonial-era warfare, this is a compelling relic of the warrior traditions of the Indian subcontinent.
