Description
This is a fine example of an original Imperial German M1860 short saber, manufactured by the renowned blade-maker Gebr. Weyersberg of Solingen and date-stamped O. 1870, placing it directly in the context of the Franco-Prussian War. Sabers of this pattern were carried by enlisted infantry, engineers, and artillery troops of the Prussian and associated German states during the critical campaigns leading to the unification of Germany. This piece features a distinctive cast-steel hilt with a straight guard terminating in rounded, opposing quillons and a heavy, smooth iron grip without checkering—a hallmark of wartime manufacture. The blade is curved with a wide single fuller, exhibiting signs of age and service wear but retaining its edge and original profile. The spine bears the inspection mark O. 1870, a clear reference to the Ordnance year of issue. The ricasso is deeply stamped with the maker’s mark: Gebr. Weyersberg, Solingen, a Solingen-based family firm with centuries of tradition in edged weapon production. The accompanying full steel scabbard remains complete, with both throat and drag intact, and includes imperial inspection proofs near the frog stud. While showing typical age-related patina and wear, it remains structurally sound and retains excellent historical character. These sabers saw use during the 1870–1871 Franco-Prussian War, when Prussia—under Otto von Bismarck’s Realpolitik—led a coalition of German states into war against Napoleon III’s Second French Empire. The resulting German victory brought about the fall of the French regime and culminated in the proclamation of the German Empire at Versailles in January 1871. The M1860 short saber would have been issued to support troops and foot artillery during this conflict, offering both a practical sidearm and a symbol of martial discipline in the field. This is a textbook Franco-Prussian War-era enlisted saber—a robust, functional sidearm from a decisive turning point in European military history.
