WW2 German Wehrmacht Turkestan Legion Volunteer (Ostlegionen) Shoulder Board Set

Description
This original matched set of enlisted shoulder boards was issued to foreign volunteers serving in the German Army (Heer) during World War II, specifically those affiliated with the Turkestanische Legion—a component of the broader Ostlegionen formations. These slip-on Schulterklappen are constructed from standard feldgrau wool with light blue Waffenfarbe piping, commonly associated with foreign auxiliaries recruited from Turkic-speaking regions of the Soviet Union, such as modern-day Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, and the Caucasus. The boards remain in excellent condition and are lined with olive and field-gray cotton, with machine-stitched buttonholes for secure attachment to Feldblusen (field tunics). The presence of blue piping, not typically used for regular branches of service within the German Army, is a key identifying feature of foreign volunteer insignia. These troops were grouped under the administrative oversight of the German Wehrmacht but often functioned with a degree of autonomy under specialized commands such as the Osttürkischer Waffen-Verband der SS or the Stab Turkestan. The Turkestan Legion was formed in 1942 as part of Nazi Germany’s strategy to exploit ethnic and political divisions within the Soviet Union. Initially composed of Red Army POWs and anti-Bolshevik refugees, these volunteer formations were organized into battalions that served in rear-area security, anti-partisan warfare, and eventually front-line defensive operations—particularly on the Eastern Front and in the Balkans. Foreign volunteers wore modified versions of standard Wehrmacht insignia, lacking national emblems and often marked by distinctive colors or materials. As the war progressed, the Germans increasingly relied on these units to offset manpower shortages, and their presence grew in strategic regions from Ukraine to France. This rare and well-preserved shoulder board set represents the complex and often overlooked dimension of foreign participation in the German war effort—particularly among the ethnic minorities of the Soviet Union, many of whom viewed German collaboration as a potential path to national liberation from Stalinist rule. These boards are a significant artifact of the multinational makeup of Germany’s wartime auxiliary forces and the broader geopolitical dynamics of the Eastern Front.
