Albanian Medal for the Liberation of the Country (Medalje për Çlirimin e Atdheut), 1945

This is an original example of the Medal for the Liberation of the Country (Medalje për Çlirimin e Atdheut), established by the government of Albania in 1945 to honor those who participated in the armed struggle against Axis occupation during World War 2. Issued shortly after the end of the war, this medal was awarded to partisans, resistance fighters, and military personnel who played an active role in the liberation of Albania from fascist forces between 1939 and 1944.

The Italian invasion of Albania in 1939 marked the beginning of a prolonged period of foreign occupation, first by Fascist Italy and later by Nazi Germany. In response, Albanian communist-led partisan units, under the leadership of Enver Hoxha and the National Liberation Movement (Lëvizja Nacionalçlirimtare), organized a guerrilla war against the occupiers and their collaborators. This armed resistance grew in intensity throughout the war and culminated in the liberation of the capital, Tirana, in November 1944.

The medal typically features national symbols of Albania such as the double-headed eagle or partisan motifs, often in a brass or bronze finish, suspended from a red ribbon emblematic of socialist and revolutionary struggle. Although multiple variations exist, all represent recognition of direct involvement in the fight for national liberation.

Recipients of the Medal for the Liberation of the Country were often also eligible for other honors in the postwar socialist honors system of Albania, which closely mirrored Soviet and Yugoslav military award traditions. This particular decoration represents a significant piece of Albania’s wartime legacy and commemorates the sacrifices of those who contributed to the country's emergence from occupation into a new era of socialist governance under the Albanian Communist Party.
