Description
This is an original Imperial Japanese Russo-Japanese War Medal, instituted by Emperor Meiji in 1906 to commemorate Japanese military service during the Russo-Japanese War of 1904–1905. The conflict marked a pivotal moment in both Japanese and global history, as it was the first time an Asian power decisively defeated a European empire in modern warfare. The medal was awarded to all Japanese military personnel—Army and Navy—who participated in operations against the Russian Empire between February 1904 and September 1905. This included soldiers, sailors, support staff, and certain civilians directly engaged in the war effort. The campaign covered key battles such as the Siege of Port Arthur, the Battle of Mukden, and the decisive naval Battle of Tsushima, where the Japanese fleet annihilated the Russian Baltic Fleet, altering the balance of naval power in the Pacific. The design of the medal reflects Imperial Japan’s symbolism and military pride. It features a rising sun above crossed army and navy standards, surrounded by a laurel wreath. The reverse side bears the kanji inscription 「明治三十七八年戦役」 ("Campaign of Meiji 37–38," referring to the years 1904–1905 in the Japanese calendar). The ribbon is of deep purple and blue, representing loyalty and the imperial cause. This medal played a broader role in reinforcing Japanese national identity and militarism during the early 20th century. Veterans of the Russo-Japanese War were widely celebrated, and their service was seen as proof of Japan's emergence as a modern imperial power. The medal remains an important artifact of the Meiji-era military and Japan’s rise on the world stage.
