Description
This is an original shoulder sleeve insignia (SSI) of the 78th Infantry Division, also known as the “Lightning Division”, worn by personnel of the division during World War II. The design features a bold white lightning bolt piercing vertically through a black background, encircled by a red ring—symbolizing speed, shock, and cohesion. Officially approved on June 23, 1922, the patch became a visual hallmark of the division's WWII combat record in Europe. The 78th Infantry Division was reactivated on August 15, 1942 at Camp Butner, North Carolina, and trained extensively before deploying to the European Theater. It arrived in England in October 1944, and landed in France in November 1944, assigned to General Omar Bradley’s 12th Army Group and the First US Army under General Courtney Hodges. The division's first major combat came during the brutal and prolonged Battle of the Hürtgen Forest, one of the longest and costliest battles fought by US forces in the European campaign. Beginning in early December 1944, the 78th fought in and around Simmerath, Germeter, and Kesternich, encountering fierce German resistance, thick forested terrain, extensive minefields, and harsh winter conditions. Casualties were high, but the division proved resilient and aggressive under fire. Following the Hürtgen, the 78th played a critical role in capturing the Schwammenauel Dam, part of the Roer River dam system. Its seizure in February 1945 was essential to preventing the Germans from flooding the Roer Valley and stalling the Allied advance into Germany. In March 1945, the 78th was among the first units to cross the Ludendorff Bridge at Remagen, a pivotal event in the final stages of the war. The division secured the Remagen bridgehead, enabling a rapid Allied push across the Rhine River—a breakthrough that hastened the collapse of the German western front. From there, the Lightning Division advanced into the Ruhr Pocket, helping to encircle and eliminate one of the last major concentrations of German forces west of the Elbe. Over 300,000 German troops were captured during this operation. The division continued its drive eastward, reaching the Sieg River and later helping secure the Cologne Plain, contributing to the final defeat of Nazi Germany. The 78th Infantry Division suffered over 8,000 battle casualties in WWII, including 1,100 killed in action, reflecting the intensity of its engagements. It earned distinction for its determination in grueling infantry assaults and for spearheading multiple critical offensives in the final months of the European war. This original WW2 insignia stands as a tribute to a division forged in some of the fiercest fighting of the Western Front—Hürtgen, Remagen, the Roer Dams, and the Ruhr. A genuine artifact of one of the most combat-tested units of the US Army in Europe.
