Instituted on September 29, 1915 by King Wilhelm II of Württemberg, the Wilhelm’s Cross for Merit in Public Welfare (Wilhelmskreuz für Verdienste um die Volkswohlfahrt) was created to recognize exceptional civilian service and humanitarian efforts during the hardships of World War I. As Germany was plunged into total war, the role of non-combatants — nurses, doctors, Red Cross workers, civic leaders, and charitable volunteers — became vital in maintaining the health and morale of the German people and military alike.

The award is named for King Wilhelm II, the last King of Württemberg, who ruled from 1891 until the abdication of the monarchy in 1918. His name and crown appear on the obverse of the medal, surrounded by a laurel wreath. The reverse is typically plain or may feature the inscription “Für Verdienste um die Volkswohlfahrt” (For Merit in Public Welfare).

This example is a wartime issue from the 1915–1918 period. The cross is finely struck and suspended from its original ribbon, typically green with black and red stripes — the official Württemberg colors.
