This is an original WW2-era US Navy China Service Medal featuring the early post-1945 crimp brooch suspension. Authorized in 1942 but retroactive to 1937, the China Service Medal was established to recognize members of the US Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard who performed service in China during two distinct periods: the pre-WW2 deployment phase from July 7, 1937 to September 7, 1939, and the post-war occupation period from September 2, 1945 to April 1, 1957.

This example includes the correct full wrap brooch with crimped fastening, characteristic of early post-war manufacture. The medal’s obverse depicts a traditional Chinese junk under sail, symbolizing both the region of service and the nature of American naval operations in the Far East. The reverse reads “For Service” above a fouled anchor.

Service in China during this era was emblematic of America’s complex strategic presence in Asia: a legacy of the Open Door Policy, protection of American nationals and interests during the Sino-Japanese conflict, and postwar occupation and stabilization efforts during the rise of communism and the Cold War.
