This WW2 Era Finnish Suomi Vänrikki Officer’s M36 Infantry Wool Jacket is an outstanding example of Finland’s wartime uniform design and manufacturing. Constructed from sturdy grey wool, it features green collar tabs with white piping and embroidered oak leaves, symbolizing the rank of vänrikki (second lieutenant) in the infantry branch. The jacket retains its original Bakelite buttons, each embossed with the Finnish lion emblem, a symbol of national pride and resistance.
The interior reveals original depot stamps, including the Finnish “SA” marking, which indicates military acceptance for service use. Additional stamps and numerals present further authenticate its history and provenance, providing a glimpse into its issuance and inspection process. The wool lining and stitching are intact, with signs of wear that attest to its practical use during the wartime period.
Introduced in 1936, the M36 uniform was designed to equip Finnish soldiers for the harsh climate of Northern Europe, balancing warmth, functionality, and a distinctive national identity. Jackets like this would have been worn by officers during the Winter War (1939–1940) and Continuation War (1941–1944) against the Soviet Union. These conflicts saw Finland fighting to maintain its independence against overwhelming odds, with Finnish forces utilizing innovative tactics, intimate knowledge of the terrain, and exemplary morale. Finnish officers, such as the one who wore this jacket, played a critical role in leading their troops during battles like those on the Karelian Isthmus and in the Lapland War.
The M36 jacket stands as a testament to Finland’s determination and ingenuity during a time of extreme adversity. This artifact is not just a piece of clothing but a fragment of history, representing the brave individuals who defended their homeland against larger powers. Its presence in any collection offers an opportunity to connect with and honor Finland’s unique military heritage during World War II.
