US Army 82nd Airborne Division 508th Infantry Regiment 2nd Battalion Paratrooper Oval

This is a regulation full-color oval worn by paratroopers of the 2nd Battalion, 508th Infantry Regiment, part of the storied 82nd Airborne Division. The oval—formally known as an Airborne background trimming—features the distinctive red border, white inner ring, and blue center field associated with the 508th, and was designed to be worn beneath a Parachutist Badge on the dress uniform to signify airborne status and unit affiliation.

The 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment (PIR) was originally activated in October 1942 and assigned to the 82nd Airborne Division. During World War II, the regiment jumped into Normandy on D-Day as part of Operation Neptune, fought in Operation Market Garden in the Netherlands, and later held the line during the Battle of the Bulge. After the war, the 508th saw multiple activations and deactivations but was ultimately reflagged as the 508th Infantry Regiment under the Army’s modern regimental system.

This oval represents the modern 2nd Battalion of the 508th Infantry Regiment, which was officially activated in the Global War on Terrorism era and continues to serve as a vital airborne infantry battalion stationed at Fort Liberty (formerly Fort Bragg), North Carolina. The 508th IR has deployed in support of operations in Iraq and Afghanistan and remains a key component of America’s rapid-deployment force.
