Description
This is an original Soviet World War II infantry entrenching tool, dated 1945 and issued during the final year of the Great Patriotic War. It features the forged steel spade head with squared point and full hardwood handle typical of wartime Red Army shovels, predating the later standardized MPL-50 design introduced in 1950. This example carries a clearly stamped 1945 date on the blade and a deeply carved Cyrillic inscription “САША Г.” (“Sasha G.”) on the wooden handle—presumably the name of the soldier to whom it was issued. Soviet infantry shovels of this style were indispensable tools for trench warfare, foxhole digging, and construction of field fortifications. They also saw brutal use in hand-to-hand combat, particularly in urban and close-quarters fighting where firearms were less practical. Red Army soldiers often personalized their equipment, and this named example adds an unusually human element to an otherwise utilitarian object. Tools like this were carried across the Eastern Front, from the frozen meatgrinder of Stalingrad to the destruction of Königsberg and the storming of Berlin. As a 1945-dated example, this shovel may have seen action in the final Soviet offensives in East Prussia or Germany itself. Still sturdy and well-preserved, this wartime Soviet shovel stands as both a practical artifact and a personal relic—linking us not just to the anonymous millions of the Red Army, but to one soldier named Sasha who survived the war with this tool in hand.
