This is an original World War II cap badge of the Vrije Nederlandse Strijdkrachten (Free Dutch Forces), manufactured in Britain by J. Gaunt of London. Struck in brass, the badge features the crowned Dutch lion (Nederlandse Leeuw) wielding a sword in its right forepaw and holding a sheaf of arrows in its left — the traditional heraldic emblem of the Kingdom of the Netherlands — set above a scroll inscribed “NEDERLAND.” The reverse bears the maker’s mark “J.R. GAUNT LONDON” and retains broken attachment lugs.

Following the German invasion of the Netherlands in May 1940, surviving Dutch military personnel who escaped to Britain were reorganized under the Dutch government-in-exile as the Vrije Nederlandse Strijdkrachten. These forces served alongside the Allies in various theaters, with their most famous formation being the 1e Nederlandse Brigade “Prinses Irene”, which saw action in Normandy, Belgium, and the Netherlands during 1944–45. Dutch naval units operated with the Royal Navy, while Dutch airmen flew in RAF squadrons such as No. 320 (Netherlands) Squadron RAF.

British-made insignia such as this cap badge were issued to Free Dutch troops during their service abroad, replacing pre-war Dutch military insignia that had been lost during the German occupation. Today, these badges remain an important symbol of Dutch resistance and the contribution of the Netherlands to the Allied war effort.
