This is a beautifully preserved example of the Dutch World War II Commemorative War Cross, parade mounted in its postwar configuration by v. Wielik B.V. of The Hague. The bronze cross features a central medallion with the bust of Queen Wilhelmina encircled by the Dutch inscription “VOOR KRIJGEVERRICHTINGEN” (“For War Deeds”), with a green and orange ribbon representing the national colors of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

Instituted in 1944, the War Cross was awarded to Dutch military personnel and resistance members for acts of bravery, distinguished service, and combat operations against Axis forces during the Second World War. It also recognized members of Allied forces who fought alongside Dutch units or contributed to the liberation of the Netherlands. The four arms of the cross are marked with a bold “W” for Wilhelmina, Queen of the Netherlands during both World Wars.

This particular example is parade mounted with original cloth backing and a period pin for wear on Dutch military or veteran dress uniforms. The medal bears the hallmark of Kon. Begeer of Voorschoten and was later remounted with a retail label by v. Wielik, a known Dutch militaria outfitter.

The Commemorative War Cross remains one of the most iconic Dutch WWII decorations, symbolizing the nation’s gratitude for resistance and resilience during the Nazi occupation from 1940–1945. This decoration is both a poignant reminder of Dutch defiance during World War II and a fitting tribute to those who helped restore Dutch sovereignty.
