This is a post–World War I example of the Médaille Militaire, one of France’s most prestigious military decorations, awarded for either exceptional bravery in combat or extended, meritorious service by non-commissioned officers and enlisted men. Instituted on 22 January 1852 by President Louis-Napoléon Bonaparte, the Médaille Militaire holds the distinction of being the highest purely military decoration still awarded in the French Republic, ranked just below the Legion of Honour and the Order of Liberation.

This particular example dates to the interwar period, likely the 1920s–1930s, as evidenced by its original full-color silk ribbon in bright yellow with green edge stripes and the finely detailed, die-struck medallion. The upper suspension is composed of a gilt trophy of arms, while the silvered medallion bears the bust of Marianne — the symbol of the French Republic — encircled by the blue enamel inscription “RÉPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE.” This is consistent with Third Republic production standards.

During World War I, over 230,000 of these medals were issued to honor those who demonstrated courage under fire. It was also awarded to wounded soldiers and foreign allies who fought alongside French forces. It remains in active use today, though more sparingly awarded, especially in recognition of valor.
