Description
The Royal Hamilton Light Infantry (Wentworth Regiment) was one of Canada’s most storied infantry units during the Second World War. Mobilized in September 1939 as part of Canada’s response to the outbreak of hostilities, the regiment was assigned to the 4th Infantry Brigade of the 2nd Canadian Infantry Division. After initial training in Canada and Britain, it was thrust into action during one of the most controversial and costly operations in Canadian military history: the Dieppe Raid. On August 19, 1942, the Royal Hamilton Light Infantry landed at Dieppe as part of Operation Jubilee, a large-scale amphibious assault intended to test German coastal defenses in occupied France. The regiment landed on the main beach in front of the town, facing formidable German fortifications. Under intense machine gun and artillery fire, the RHLI sustained severe casualties. Of the nearly 600 men who landed, more than 200 were killed and a similar number taken prisoner. Despite the failure of the operation, the regiment’s conduct under fire was noted for its bravery and discipline amid chaos. The Dieppe Raid became a formative episode in Canadian military identity and the RHLI’s most defining action of the war. After Dieppe, the regiment was reinforced and continued to train in England for the eventual full-scale invasion of Europe. In July 1944, the RHLI landed in Normandy and participated in the battles for Caen and the Falaise Pocket. It continued to fight through northern France and into the Low Countries during the late summer and autumn of 1944. The regiment played a key role in the clearing of the Scheldt Estuary, a vital operation that opened the port of Antwerp to Allied supply lines. In early 1945, the RHLI advanced into Germany during the Rhineland Campaign and the final push across the Reichswald. It continued to engage German forces until the cessation of hostilities in May. By war’s end, the Royal Hamilton Light Infantry had taken part in some of the most strategically significant and tactically challenging operations faced by the Canadian Army in northwest Europe. Its wartime service, marked by sacrifice and resilience, earned the regiment a permanent place in the history of Canada’s armed forces.
